If Candy is Bad for Teeth, What’s Good for Them?

October 30th, 2007

We all know that sugary and starchy foods are bad for the teeth because they can cause plaque buildup and eventually decay. There is enough warning out there about what we should not eat for our teeth’s sake. So, what foods should we eat to improve our dental health, and why are they good for our pearly whites?

Many healthy foods can help your teeth stay in good condition. Since they help wash food particles away from teeth quickly, fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, such as melons, cucumbers, and celery are good at keeping teeth free of plaque buildup. Even your own saliva is a first class cleanser for your teeth. This is why foods such as apples and carrots, and greens high in fiber such as broccoli and spinach can help your teeth. They require more chewing, which stimulates saliva production to wash away food and minimize plaque buildup. Foods high in calcium are also beneficial because they strengthen your teeth. Of course, dairy products such as aged cheeses, yogurt and milk are top-notch sources of calcium. But so are many dark green vegetables and nuts such as spinach, collard greens, broccoli, almonds, and tofu. However, since milk contains sugar, don’t drink it in the evening without brushing afterwards, or you may defeat the purpose!
