When it Comes to Taking Your Meds, This is One Really Sweet Tooth
May 23rd, 2007Forgot to take your pills again? Researchers are working on a new way of doling out drugs that may make you smile.
If you’re anything like me, remembering to take your medicine at a specific time is not only a difficult task, but also so rare that when it does happen, it’s cause for celebration.
Well, we’re not alone. Studies show that people don’t take their required medication about half the time, either because they forget or they see it as an inconvenience.
But soon a fake tooth will rescue us in the face of forgetfulness (or absolute downright laziness).
Yes, a fake tooth.
Israeli and European researchers at Saliwell Ltd. are actually creating an artificial molar called IntelliDrug designed to dispense a specific dose of medication in the mouth at a precise time. This “super tooth” will pick up the slack for people who forget to take their pills, and can even save the lives of people who depend on scheduled drug treatment.
Take diabetics for example. With IntelliDrug, they no longer have to resort to pricking themselves to get regular insulin doses. Alzheimer’s patients who forget to take their medication will also find IntelliDrug beneficial, as will asthmatics who suffer from sporadic asthma attacks, especially in the middle of the night. When the project is complete, gone will be the days of missed meds for the forgetful.
Researchers are also trying to sweeten the deal for high-tech junkies. They are trying to tickle their sweet tooth by using communication technology to make medicine dispersion even easier. Plans to control the medicine release by remote or even a cell phone are in the works.
So far, ongoing animal clinical trials have proven to be a success, and researchers hope to start trying it out on humans later this year.
